For decades, Keiro and Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) have provided health, social, and other supportive services and programs for Japanese American and Japanese older adults and their caregivers. In August of 2017, the two organizations announced a partnership to expand and enhance LTSC’s existing bilingual services, with a focus on caregiver programs, addressing social isolation through support of the Far East Lounge, and temporary emergency aid to older adults through a Client Assistance Fund.

In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when need was at an all-time high, the partnership pivoted to support mental health services for lower income, Japanese-speaking older adults — which continues to this day.

LTSC is one of the few organizations able to provide mental health counseling services in Japanese. With the need for mental health support continuing to grow, these services remain vital in addressing mental health issues and their impact on both the individual and their families. Since 2020, with the support of Keiro, LTSC has provided more than 13,300 hours of free counseling and case management to older adults and caregivers in Our Community.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What services are available through the LTSC Partnership?

Mental health counseling and case management are the primary services provided. LTSC staff will conduct an initial assessment to determine what services may be of most benefit to the prospective client.

Who is eligible to receive services?

This partnership focuses on providing services to older adults in Our Community who are lower income (such as on a fixed income and/or receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income). The prospective client must live in Los Angeles, Orange, or Ventura County.

Do I need to have a mental health diagnosis to be eligible?

No. While the partnership supports clients with diagnoses such as clinical depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, it also serves those without a diagnosis but who may be experiencing mental health concerns. These may be due to social isolation and loneliness, challenging family dynamics and relationships, or lack of financial security.

Is there a cost for the services?

Mental health counseling and case management services are provided free of charge through the partnership. The cost of any additional services will be discussed with the client/their loved ones and the LTSC staff.
